pirates continues to dominate the box office

after two weeks of being in release, pirates of the caribbean: at world's end managed to keep the top spot at the box office. despite heavy advertising, critical praise, and word of mouth buzz, the judd apatow comedy knocked up came in at number two (although it did make a respectable $29 million). i'm happy that mr. brooks only made 10 million. not because i'm still mad at kevin costner for waterworld, but because whoever cast dane cook in that movie should be fired. and lastly, thank goodness shia lebeouf still has a movie in the top 10. here's the rest of the top 10:

1. pirates of the caribbean: at world's end- $43.2M
2. knocked up- $29.3M
3. shrek the third- $26.7M
4. mr. brooks- $10M
5. spider-man 3- $7.5M
6. waitress $2.02M
7. gracie $1.35M
8. bug- $1.22M
9. 28 weeks later- $1.2M
10. disturbia- $1.13M

spidey 3 breaks box office records (duh)

spider-man 3 shattered previous box office records this past weekend. the film officially kicked off the summer movie season and took in an estimated $148 million dollars domestically. worldwide, the film took in an estimated $227 million in 105 foreign countries (beating out previous record-holder star wars: episode 3). i would also like to take credit for $22 dollars worth of those sales. yes, i saw it twice. i'm a sucker.

so congrats spidey cast, way to whore yourselves out. all of those promotional appearances (i.e. spider-man week in nyc, appearances on talk shows, the museum of natural history, and world wide premieres) paid off! although you're still shy of that alleged $300 million that went into making and marketing the film. but something tells me they'll make that money in no time.

in honor of spider-man 3's number one spot at the box office, here's some movie trivia for you:
  • the release date for the film was set before spider-man 2 was even released.
  • spider-man 3 combines all three raimi brothers. sam raimi as the director, ivan raimi as one of the writers and ted raimi as an actor in the role of hoffman.
  • while being in the venom costume, topher grace didn't drink any water during his breaks.
  • partial scenes, where spider-man is hanging from the back of an armored car, where filmed in downtown cleveland ohio, due to expensive shooting prices in new york city.
  • the over 600 latex "web" balloons in the celebration scene had to be hand-painted with a sharpie marker.

oh, and here are the rest of the top movies this weekend:

1) spider-man 3= $148 million

2) disturbia- $5.72 million

3) fracture- $3.5 million

4) the invisible- $3.12 million

5) next- $2.77 million
